Our 29th Annual BTC Clay Court Championships was held last weekend, June 5-7. Once again this was a great tournament with 26 entries in Mens Open ( the most in recent years) and 17 in Mens “B” singles

We fell a bit short in Womens singles with 4 entries and hope to improve upon that next year

The weather was perfect, especially on Saturday, with temps in the low 70′s and no humidity. The courts played great. I thought we were in Palm Springs or San Diego for a moment.  Pizza lovers did a great job finishing our free Pizza courtesy of Dominos and BTC Clay Court shirts were seen in abundance.

We ran five events, Mens Open, “B” and women singles, Mixed doubles and Mens Open doubles. Men singles winner was Jon Jaklitsch of Islip, NY who defeated Alexy Kalinin of Russia 6-3,6-2 in the finals. Jon attend Cornell University where is currently plays # 1 singles and led the Big Red to a 2nd place finish in the Ivy conference this spring, their best finish ever.

Juan Carlos Corona -Binghamton/BTC won Mens “B” singles, avenging his runner up finish last year defeating Sergey Ten of Horseheads 7-5,6-3.

Mary Ellen Halm/Tim Klee of Elmira won Mixed over Colleen Hanzes/Jim Orr – BTC. Mary Ellen has now won about five mexed title in our clay court wiht about five different partners.

Brittnay Filip of Vestal, heading to Siena College this fall defeated Colleen Hanzes in the womens final 6-3,6-4

Andre Putreya/Raphael Almeida – Syracuse upended Billy Mendler/Kris Shumway in the mens doubles final 3-6,6-3,6-4.

Jon Jaklitsch & Andre Putreya/Raphael Almeida, by virtue of their singles and doubles titles, gain automatic entry into the qualifiers of the Levene Gouldin & Thompson Tennis Challenger, a $50,000 USTA Mens Pro Circuit Event, to be held at Rec Park Aug 7 & 8. We should go root them on and see how they fare against the pros! Thanks to all who participated and attended our event. We will have a special 30 year celebration in 2010!
