Gennett/Sambursky recap

Posted by Michael Starke on 14 Mar 2008 | Tagged as: General

Dan & Malvenia Sambursky. Their child, Issac Alexander was delivered on Tuesday!Way to schedule around the pro am finalists: Jeff Conklin & Jordy Asher winners: Karl Kuehn & Kris Shumway.

Our 5th Annual Gennett/Sambursly Mens Pro-Am took place Saturday, February 23 and once again was a great success. Amatuers did an admirable job tried to not show up their pros too bad. Our pros came up with their usual array of touch shots, deft volleys and between the leg winners.

In the end, Kris Shumway & Karl Keuhn prevailed in the finals over Jordy Asher & Jeff Conklin 10-8 in a super tiebreak. The tennis was a lot of fun, and spectators and players alike all had a good time. Karl Kuehn broke Parker Gennett’s 4 year amateur winning streak, thus avoiding sending Paker up to the pro ranks by virture of our newly drafted 5 year in a row rule. It might have helped that due to a plane delay, Parker could not participate this year!

We would like to thank or sponsors Dan Sambursky & Parker Gennett. We all appreciate their generosity.

USTA Recreational Coaches Workshop recap

Posted by Michael Starke on 12 Feb 2008 | Tagged as: General

Binghamton Tennis Center  hosted a USTA Recreational Coaches Workshop Saturday, March 8 from 10:30 am-5 pm. 24 people signed up from around upstate NY, and 20 braved the weather and wer rewarded for their efforts. The workshop covered modern basic & advanced teaching techniques, coaching, use of spinner and pressureless tennis balls, and quick start tennis, the latest in beginner teaching concepts. We  also covered some  some great drills.

The clinic was run by Jack & Judith Curry, master clinicians and everyone in attendance was impressed and gained much from the clinic. We plan to run host this workshop yearly, and hope to get more elementary and middle school gym teachers,  who may wish to run tennis programs as a part of their curriculum. Many thanks to all of you who attended. Was a great time.
