Meet our teaching staff. BTC's teaching crew has taught a lot of lessons and run quality junior programs over the years. Combined they amass over 100 years of teaching experience and are a group of dedicated professionals who have great passion for the game and our members and thoroughly enjoy teaching. Together they make a perfect compliment and are simply the best!


Whether you are a beginner looking to learn in a fun and relaxed atmosphere or a top quality junior with high aspirations, we will serve you an ace every time. Our pros have the ability to work with players of all levels and are available for both private and group lessons.

Kris Shumway - General Manager

Having worked in the tennis & fitness industry for 20 years Kris brings back with him a wealth of knowledge and experience. His career has been on a steady rise and includes extensive teaching and fitness experience, as well as being Head Teaching Professional & Director of Tennis at various tennis/fitness clubs in Pa.

Kristopher is a USPTA Elite Professional and a former regional USPTA board member.

Kris is married to Jessica and has 3 children, Daughters- Makayla and Jocelyn and Son Elijah.

Michael Starke – Owner

USPTA-Elite Professional

Lesson Cost: $75.00/hour

During the past 40 years, Michael has been a leader in the tennis community, forming the Triple Cities Tennis Association, bringing the Levene Gouldin & Thompson $50,000 Mens' Tennis Challenger to Binghamton, and coaching the Binghamton University Mens' Tennis Team from 1987-2006. He has been involved in the growth and development of the local USTA adult leagues and has conducted numerous free tennis clinics and seminars.

His enthusiasm, knowledge, and passion for tennis continue to brighten BTC. Michael teaches select private lessons. and will continue to help grow and evolve tennis in the Triple Cities. Michael resides in Binghamton with his wife, Kristen. 

Billy Mendler – Head Teaching Professional

Lesson Cost: $75.00/hour

Billy began his career here in 1996 and has made BTC his home. He oversees our Special Events and Summer Adult Camp. Billy’s likable personality, teaching, and playing ability make him a favorite among both juniors and adults. Billy has guided many of our top juniors on their path to success. He has an extensive playing background that includes playing #1 singles for Kings College where he competed in the Division III NCAA Championships. His pro career includes being a 10 time participant in the $50,000 Levene Gouldin & Thompson Tennis Challenger and holding 3 ATP doubles points!

Collin Crawford – Director of Junior Development


Lesson Cost $68.00/hour

Coming aboard in 1999, Collin has made a tremendous impact on our junior programs, spearheading our Junior Competitive Tennis Pathway, and he works with many of our top juniors.

As our Junior Director, Collin has established himself as stand out coach in USTA’s Eastern Region.  He has been the head coach of SUNY Broome for the past 13 years where he has led them to 10 regional titles.  With his educational background in health education he has an uncanny ability to connect with the players on the court.  He specializes in stroke production and intricacies of each component of the game.  His attention to detail is an attribute that sets him and his students apart from the competition.  Collin’s thirst for continuing his education on latest in techniques and drills makes him a great fit for our aspiring stars of tomorrow.


Thanks to Collin's leadership, we have had several ranked BTC juniors and tournament competitors. Our year round Gold "Elite" Group attracts juniors from around our region. Collin is also an avid hockey competitor and lives in Vestal, now married with his long time companion, Courtney.

Clark Crawford – Teaching Pro

Lesson Cost $62.00/hour

Our ever popular teaching pro, Clark’s jovial personality and technical knowledge for tennis keeps his lessons fun, yet informative. Clark runs our Saturday JCTP, summer Junior 10 and under Tennis Camp.   A big fan of Quickstart Tennis, Clark is getting our new juniors playing games and ladder matches, quickly moving up the ranks. An official certified USRSA stringer, Clark has strung thousands of tennis racquets, combining your game style with the latest stringing technology to deliver a custom strung perfect playing racquet. Clark resides in Binghamton, a stones throw from BTC and has a daughter, Cendra, who is a house guest at BTC!

Ryan Cummings

PTR Instructor

Ryan brings a wealth of tennis experience to the staff. A life long-player, Ryan has been teaching private and group lessons for many years and is PTR certified. Ryan's new wave techniques and positive attitude help keep BTC current and moving forward. Ryan's philosophy embraces the physical and mental benefits of the game, and his lessons radiate his passion and commitment.  Ryan runs our junior ladder and USTA play days, and he plays a key role in junior and adult programming here at BTC. Ryan is the director of Youth Tennis in the Town of Vestal, where he resides with his wife, Amanda.



Evan Picciano


Lesson Cost $68.00/hour

Evan has been with the Binghamton Tennis Center for the past three years.  He has been continuing to grow as a pro and is now an USPTA certified professional.    Evan has been a local standout tennis player in the Southern Tier.  


Current Windsor Boys and Girls HS Coach

Played in the number one singles position at Chenango Forks HS

Played for two years at SUNY Broome at #1 singles/doubles

Competed in National Tournament for NJCAA


Evan is also an avid runner and likes to to compete as well.  He has averaged a 6:32 pace for over 6 miles.

Alex Kosicki

We want to extend a warm welcome to our new full time pro here at BTC.  Welcome Alex Kosicki!!!  Alex is originally from New York, but has been a collegiate coach for a number of years. 

Kosicki comes to BTC from Division III Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia and Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, where he had served as head tennis coach from 2018-2020, and 2016-2018, respectively. Highlights of his career as a Division III coach include the USA South Conference Sportsmanship Award and the ITA Regional Community Service and Outreach Award. In addition, numerous players earned ITA All-Academic status, and his team won multiple Team GPA Awards.  


In addition to his tennis duties, Kosicki also served as head coach of the cross country team at Hollins and Wesleyan.  


Prior to coaching at all-womens universities, Kosicki served as the associate head tennis coach for both the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Western New England University (WNEU) in Massachusetts. WNEU teams won over 100 matches during his eight-year tenure. From 2013-16, Kosicki also coached women’s basketball at Holyoke Community College and spent a year as their interim sports information director.  


Kosicki is a 2008 graduate of Springfield College, where he was a four-year member of the varsity tennis team.

Office Staff

Trace Sladish- Office Manager


With us since 2009, Trace runs the show with charm, wit, and warm personality. Whether it's serving a member's tennis request or serving up a slice of cake and ice-cream, Trace always serves an Ace with our customers. She keeps her "desk peeps" in line and is an essential part of BTC's team and success. A strong 4.0 player, she can been seen "filling in" groups missing a 4th and more than holding her own.


Kris Starke- Pro Shop Manager


As pro shop manager, Kris makes BTC's pro shop boutique the place to shop for the latest in clothing, racquets, and shoes. Her uncanny eye for fashion design has kept our customers looking sharp and in vogue! Kris also provides invaluable support at the desk in helping Trace keep us all in line. Married to Michael, they have two children who have now reached adulthood, 18 according to them!
